An outrigger netting system is designed to create a safer work environment on a jobsite. These systems can provide fall protection and debris containment that lowers jobsite injuries. Outrigger netting systems should be designed and installed in compliance with OSHA fall protection standards and containment standards.
Jobsite and Employee Protection
As an employer in the construction industry, you have a duty to protect your employees or any other people that are on your jobsite. This means you must provide safety solutions such as fall protection or debris containment systems that protect people from injury. Construction sites have many hazards and keeping people safe can be a difficult task.
One way to improve the safety of your jobsite is to have an outrigger netting system installed to protect the perimeter of a construction project. This netting system will provide fall protection to employees working at height, preventing injuries from falling. It also can protect people at lower levels by catching falling debris.
Compliance with OSHA Standards
Outrigger netting systems must comply with OSHA’s fall protection standards for safety net systems. According to OSHA 1926.105, “Safety nets shall be provided when workplaces are more than 25 feet above the ground or water surface, or other surfaces where the use of ladders, scaffolds, catch platforms, temporary floors, safety lines, or safety belts is impractical.”
OSHA requires that netting systems be installed as close as possible under the working or walking surface and never more than 30 feet below that level. It is also required that drop testing is done on the safety nets to make sure the nets are installed properly. Netting systems must be inspected at least once a week for wear or damage. Safety nets for fall protection must have mesh openings that do not exceed 36 square inches. When outrigger netting is used to catch debris, any item that is caught must be removed from the net as soon as possible.
