Staying Safe on the Jobsite Throughout COVID-19 Crisis

Throughout this rapidly changing coronavirus crisis, it is important for contractors, subcontractors and employees to stay on top of new safety guidelines to keep jobsites safe and healthy. Maintaining social distancing at all times is extremely important to ensure that your jobsite and construction industry remains operational.

Jobsite Safety Recommendations for COVID-19

Ensuring that your jobsite stays safe throughout the coronavirus crisis requires practicing safety measures including:

  • Actively encouraging sick employees to stay home. Any workers who have flu-like symptoms or symptoms of acute respiratory illness should stay at home and not return to work until they are free of any symptoms including a fever (100.4⁰F or greater) for at least 72 hours without the use of symptom-altering or fever-reducing medicines.
  • Promote frequent and thorough hand washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use hand sanitizer (>60% alcohol) when hand washing facilities are not available.
  • Promote respiratory etiquette.  Cover your cough, or sneeze into your elbow, or use a tissue.
  • Avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • If on a project with no running water, promote handwashing by utilizing an Igloo-type water cooler or equivalent container filled with clean water and labeled “hand washing only”.
  • Provide soap and water, paper towels, and trash receptacles.
  • Ensure that adequate supplies of cleaning products are maintained. Place hand sanitizer in multiple locations or in conference rooms to encourage good hand hygiene.
  • Subcontractors should provide adequate sanitary/handwashing facilities on the project as well.
  • Do not use a common water cooler. Provide individual water bottles or instruct workers to bring.
  • No ride sharing, no shared wearable equipment.
  • Cleaning of shared tools, vehicles, equipment and other common touch points should be performed daily, and with every shift or personnel change.
  • Before and after driving vehicles, wipe down the steering wheel, door handles, seat belt, and control knobs such as blinker, radio, etc.
  • Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) of all disinfectants on site.
